Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, UCSB Arts & Lectures in March 2004.Concerts, dramatic performances, dance, and foreign films offered by the University enhance Santa Barbara's cultural climate. Enjoy the talents of international performers as well as students, faculty, and artists from the local area.

Dance
  • Division of Dance
    Innovative and traditional performances are offered throughout the year by the Division of Dance. Students perform in three annual concerts using Hatlen Theater and the Ballet Studio as their venues. Santa Barbara's only professional modern dance company, the Santa Barbara Dance Theater, is in residence at UCSB and performs on campus and throughout the Santa Barbara area.

Music
  • Choirs
    The Music Department's various choirs reflect the impressive vocal talents of UCSB's professional staff, faculty, and students. Lovers of 19th Century romantic music will enjoy UCSB's Chamber Choir, which recently traveled to Europe for its third time to complete a residency at France's prestigious International Academy of Choral Conducting. The Gospel Choir often enjoys sold-out performances in Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall.

  • Digital Performances
    These concerts feature the latest innovations in electronic and computer music in a mix of works by students and advanced artists in the field, with multichannel sound projections using the Creatophone spatial sound system.

  • Ensembles
    UCSB hosts several talented musical ensembles. A sampling includes Jazz, Percussion, Wind, Guitar, Middle East, Contemporary Music, and Indian Music. Each ensemble performs throughout the year in select venues throughout the Santa Barbara area.

  • Master Classes
    The Music Department offers Master Classes in association with its Artists-in-Residency program and with UCSB Arts & Lectures. Talented students, faculty, and community members are invited to attend intense workshops led by gifted international artists.

    In addition to student, staff, and faculty performances, the Music Department cultivates an impressive offering of international soloists. Gifted artists from around the globe perform at the University and often offer Master Classes open to the local community for observation.

  • World Music Series
    Talented student and faculty cellists, pianists, vocalists, jazz artists, multicultural ensembles, and other musical artists share their talents with UCSB audiences at regularly scheduled performances. The series is open to the public free of charge at the UCSB Music Bowl.

  • Arts and Lectures Public Events on Campus
    The Arts & Lectures performing arts season features professional touring artists from around the world. Dance companies, classical and early music ensembles, jazz artists, folk and world music groups, and theatre artists perform in Campbell Hall and other on and off-campus venues. The quarterly film series offers exceptional international cinema, independent films, documentary features, and silent classics with live musical accompaniment.

  • Public Arts and Lectures in the Community
    UCSB Arts & Lectures serves the UCSB campus and the Santa Barbara community by extending and supplementing the intellectual life of the classroom and providing diverse and unique cultural programming. We present performances featuring touring artists from all over the world-first-rate dancers, classical and world musicians, performance artists and theater companies. We screen films-international cinema, independent films, documentaries, and the best Hollywood movies, and occasionally, restored silent classics with live piano accompaniment. We offer lectures and special events featuring writers, artists, government officials, mountain climbers/adventurers, scientists and other notable accomplished people. We also manage the campus-wide Regents' Lectureship Program. We create and operate an Artists-in-Residence program that features master classes, lecture-demonstrations, open rehearsals, and classroom discussions at UCSB in addition to visits to local elementary and high schools.

Theater
  • Department of Theater and Dance
    Drawing from the rich talent base at UCSB, the Department of Theater and Dance offers live theatrical performances each quarter. Popular plays and student creations are performed in the Studio and Hatlen theaters in Snidecor Hall and the new Performing Arts Theater in the Humanities and Social Science Building.
