Materials Society Honors UCSB Associate Professor

May 27, 2003

(Santa Barbara, Calif.) – Tim Deming, associate professor of materials and chemistry at the University of California, Santa Barbara, received an Outstanding Young Investigator Award last month from the Materials Research Society during their spring meeting in San Francisco. The MRS said this award was established to recognize "outstanding interdisciplinary materials research by a young scientist or engineer." Deming was honored for "his discovery of synthetic methods to produce polypeptide homopolymers and block copolymers with exquisite control of block length, sequence, and secondary structure…" He has been on the UCSB faculty since 1995.

Deming, who gave a talk on his research, noted that he is exploring how different polymers self-assemble in a variety of structures, and that some of these assemblies have "possible biomedical applications." He has earned similar young investigator awards in the past from the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, and several foundations.
