U.S. NEWS AND WORLD REPORT RANKS UCSB AMONG BEST UNIVERSITIES

September 13, 2002

U. S. News and World Report has again ranked the University of California, Santa Barbara among the top 50 doctoral degree-granting universities in the country. The magazine has released its annual college placements online today at USNews.com. The newstand publication, America's Best Colleges, which contains the college rankings, will go on sale Monday, Sept. 16.

This year, UC Santa Barbara tied for 47th place, up from 48th last year, and was once again ranked 14th among all public universities in the U.S. In addition, UCSB's College of Engineering was listed as the 27th best, up from last year's 32nd place ranking.

To rank colleges and universities, U.S. News and World Report first assigns schools to a group of their peers, based on categories developed by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Next, data on up to 16 indicators of academic quality are gathered and tabulated and, finally, colleges are ranked in their categories by their total weighted score.

The publication looks at all 249 universities in the country (162 public, and 87 private) that offer a wide range of undergraduate majors as well as master's and doctoral degrees.
