SPIRITUALITY AT THE TURN OF THE LAST MILLENNIUM UCSB PROFESSOR TO DISCUSS RELIGION IN YEAR 1000

November 9, 1999

As we prepare to embark on a third millennium A.D., Ninian Smart, UCSB emeritus professor of religious studies, will recall what religion was all about at the conclusion of the first in a talk at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 6 at the University Club, 1332 Santa Barbara St. in Santa Barbara.

Smart, UCSB's J.F. Rowny professor of comparative religions emeritus, will give a presentation titled "Religion and Spirituality 1000 Years Ago: Worship and Mysticism in the Great Religions."

Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam were all flourishing in the year 1000 A.D. Smart will tell where they existed and where they were headed.

The lecture is part of the UCSB General Affiliates Spirituality and Culture series. It is sponsored by the UCSB General Affiliates and the Office of Community Relations in cooperation with the Department of Religious Studies.

Space is limited for Smart's talk and early registration is encouraged. Tickets for General Affiliates and Chancellor's Council members are $5 each. Non-member tickets are $8 each.
