GLOBAL MOTION: MALACHI FARRELL OPENING IS TOMORROW

November 8, 1999

The University Art Museum at UC Santa Barbara will celebrate Malachi Farrell's latest creation—replete with dancing tubes and glow-in-the-dark kissing lips—with an opening reception for the international multimedia artist on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at 5:30 p.m. on the front lawn of the campus' College of Creative Studies.

Farrell's sculpture, "Santa Fu," is a magical, fun-house installation with a decided edge, an interactive environment to be experienced as much as seen. Addressing fundamental human dramas through uncanny mechanical creations, Farrell's work is at once exciting, playful, and deeply cerebral.

Farrell, who has been known to create his own motherboards to run his pieces, is an Irish-born artist living and working in Paris. Considered an important new voice in the European art world, he is known for his kinetic installations of infernal machines and robot figures that provocatively analyze political events.

Exhibition will be open Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. through Nov. 23. The public may contact the University Art Museum for more information at 893-2951. For more information about the artist or the museum, see their web site at http://www.uam.ucsb.edu/
