Author Gray Brechin teamed with photographer Robert Dawson to graphically point out the differences and deficiencies in their widely acclaimed book, "Farewell Promised Land: Waking from the California Dream," published last March.
Brechin will visit Santa Barbara Wednesday, Oct. 6 to discuss the book, called "troubling and illuminating" by James Houston of the San Francisco Chronicle, and to speak his mind on preserving the state's remaining luster. The talk, sponsored by the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center at the University of California, Santa Barbara will run from 5:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. in the Cabrillo Pavilion Arts Center, 1118 East Cabrillo Boulevard. Cost of admission is $7.50.
Brechin, a UC Berkeley trained historical geographer, has been a prolific writer on environmental issues. Another book, "Imperial San Francisco: Urban Power, Earthly Ruin" has just been published by the University of California Press.
