UCSB Police Respond Quickly to Report of Suspicious Person at South Hall

October 19, 2009

(Santa Barbara, Calif.) –– UC Santa Barbara police are investigating an incident in which a suspicious person was seen on the sixth-floor balcony of the campus's South Hall. One caller to police indicated the person had a weapon, but after interviewing several witnesses, and conducting a floor-to-floor, room-to-room search, police determined that no weapon was involved.

As a precautionary measure, emergency e-mail and text messages to the campus community via the UCSB Alert system instructed everyone on campus to seek shelter in place. That instruction was lifted once the search was completed and no suspect was found. Campus activities and classes are operating as scheduled Monday evening.

The entire incident lasted a little more than an hour, concluding at about 4:20 p.m. Responding to the scene were UCSB Police, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department, and County Fire Department personnel.

The UCSB Police Department is continuing its investigation into the incident.
