S.B. COUNTY YOUTHS TO TEST THEIR ROCKET DESIGN SKILLS

May 27, 1998

Approximately 200 pre-college participants of the Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) program in Santa Barbara County will test their craftsmanship and design skills in a rocketry competition at Vandenberg Air Force Base on Saturday, May 30.

The sixth annual MESA Rocket Launch competition, sponsored by Lockheed-Martin and the U.S. Air Force, begins at 9 a.m. and concludes at 2 p.m. Lockheed-Martin personnel will serve as judges, operate the launch-pads, and provide participants with a barbecue lunch.

"This activity allows many of these talented young scholars an opportunity to build and test a launch mechanism," says Ray Norton, director of UC Santa Barbara's MESA Center. "More importantly, this provides an excellent vehicle for MESA students—many of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds—the opportunity to interact with engineers from Lockheed-Martin and members of the U.S. Air Force."

The event is not open to the public. For further information, call 805-893-4026.
