UCSB Scientist to Give Prestigious Faculty Research Lecture on Nanotechnology

(Santa Barbara, Calif.) – Evelyn Hu, an internationally recognized expert in nanotechnology at UC Santa Barbara, will discuss her research when she gives UCSB's 2005 Faculty Research Lecture Tuesday, May 24 at 4 p.m. in Room 1001 of the Engineering Science Building. The lectureship is awarded once each year and is considered to be the highest honor awarded by the university faculty to one of its members. The lecture is free and open to the public. Hu, director of the California Nanosystems Institute, is a professor of materials and of electrical and computer engineering. Her talk, "Michelangelo's Laser: Sculpting Form into Function," will describe her research studying how electrons and photons can be controlled by carefully shaping the materials that make up their environment. Hu has been recognized for her scholarly achievements many times before. She is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the American Physical Society. In 1999, she received the UCSB Academic Senate's Distinguished Teaching Award. In 2000, the American Association for the Advancement of Science presented her with its Lifetime Mentor Award.
