National Conference to Address Writing Instruction

January 20, 2005

(Santa Barbara, Califl) – More than 250 writing educators from all over the country—and other nations—are expected to participate in a conference at UC Santa Barbara February 5-6 that will address questions about how best to teach writing to today's students at all levels of their education.

The conference, enitited "Writing Research in the Making," will offer more than 100 panel discussions and workshops to provide opportunities for writing specialists to exchange ideas about the challenges that face today's writers and writing instructors.

New state-mandated writing requirements for students, such as writing assessments for 4th and 7th graders, as well as the new SAT essay examination, raise questions among educators about the future of writing instruction. Technologies, too, particularly the Internet, are affecting the ways in which people read and write.

"By bringing together researchers from different disciplines, the conference will encourage the development of new perspectives and new research methods," said Charles Bazerman, professor and chair of the Education Department in UCSB's Gevirtz Graduate School of Education, one of the chief sponsors of the event.

Other sponsors include the UCSB Writing Program, the South Coast Writing Project, the UCSB Graduate Division and the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center.
