UCSB Anthropologist Awarded Dickson Emeriti Professorship

(Santa Barbara, Calif.) – Barbara Voorhies, professor emeritus of anthropology at UC Santa Barbara, has been awarded the 2004-2005 Dickson Emeriti Professorship, an annual award given to retired faculty members at UCSB. Since retiring in 1994, Voorhies has continued to be active in field research, mentors graduate students, and teaches when she can. She has recently completed two books on her research interest in the archaeology of Mesoamerica. Voorhies plans to use her award to conduct a study of modern-day clam procurement and processing at a site in Costa Rica. Voorhies was nominated by her department because of her "intensive involvement in research upon retirement and her continual participation in departmental affairs." The gift endowment was established in 1955 by Edward Dickson, who served as a University of California Regent from 1913 to 1946, the longest tenure of any Regent to date.
