UCSB Symphony Orchestra

Richard Rintoul leads the orchestra in the second performance of Justin Aftab's "Hypothesis," as well as excerpts from Wagner's "Die Götterdämmerung" and Stravinsky's "Firebird." Concerto Competition winners Alex Chang and Stella Hsin-hsin Hsu are featured respectively in Walton's "Viola Concerto" and Rachmaninov's "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini." The men's and women's choruses perform "Cantiques," a program of sacred music from the 16th- and 20th-centuries, including early music by Hassler, Arcadelt, Palestrina, Monteverdi and Biebl. They will also present 20th-century works by Thompson, Fauré, Duruflé and Delibes's little-known "Messe Brève." Donation of $7 and $15 at the door.

Nine poets share work that was inspired by interviews with scientists from the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS). The event celebrates "Year of Science 2009," which supports public understanding of the process and nature of science.

Ethics specialist Jim Lichtman and Capps Center Director Wade Clark Roof will discuss the findings of the recent nationwide poll, which provides a measure of how Americans graded President Obama on qualities and issues they consider most important to the country. A reception follows. Free.
