Parents’ Weekend Volunteers Needed
Help is needed for stuffing tote bags and checking pre-registered participants into Parents’ and Family Weekend, Nov. 2-4. The bags will be loaded on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at the Hollister Research Center, and the check-ins are set for Nov. 2 and 3. Call Elizabeth Nickles (x4928) in the Community Events Office if you can help.

Whistleblower Comments Sought
The period for comments on proposed UCSB whistleblower procedures and draft retaliation protection policies will end on Nov. 5, announced Meta Clow, campus policy and records management coordinator. The draft procedures and policies are found at <www.vcadmin.ucsb.edu/whistleblower.html>, and define “protected disclosure,” among other things. Comments should be e-mailed to policy@ucsb.edu.


HONORS & AWARDS


Catherine Albanese, professor and chair of religious studies, will be presented next month with the American Academy of Religion’s Award for Excellence in Religion (historical studies) for her book “A Republic of Mind and Spirit: A Cultural History of American Metaphysical Religion.” The award recognizes “new scholarly publications that make significant contributions” to how religion is studied.


Denise Segura, professor of sociology, recently received an infrequently issued honor, the Lifetime Distinguished Contributions to Research, Teaching, and Service Award, from the Latino/a Sociology Section of the American Sociological Association.



PUBLICATIONS


Mario Garcia, professor of Chicana/o studies and history, has edited a groundbreaking new book on César Chávez’s spirituality, titled “The Gospel of César Chávez: My Faith in Action” (Sheed & Ward, 2007).



TRANSITIONS


Melanie Hoven is the associate editor and designer of Diversity Forum newsletter, the new publication produced by the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor. Hoven came to UCSB from Portland, Ore.



Kyle Richards, for five years the director of the Resource Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity, has been promoted to analyst for planning, budget, and family issues for the UCSB Academic Senate.


Carol Sauceda, who formerly worked as a training manager for Sansum Clinic, has been appointed the director of sexual harassment prevention and diversity education. She is based at the Women’s Center.
