Some Parking May Serve as Storage

If feasible, the 22 Parking structure near the Events Center may be used, in part, for vehicle storage after it opens. Limited parking is available now on the first two levels. |

Whether or not 300 stalls in the new 22 Parking structure near the Events Center should be reserved for automobile storage at a rate of $72 per month is the focus of a feasibility study. It will be conducted next month by Transportation and Parking Services (T&PS). In the meantime, around 400 spaces will be available this week in 22 Parking structure for vehicles that usually park in lots 20 & 21. Construction needs have closed those lots.
At its Feb. 7 meeting, the Ratepayer Board, which advises
the chancellor on parking and transportation operations, approved the launch
of the study and a subsequent pilot program to test its findings. The board
is considering the storage program as a long-term revenue source for T&PS,
which is an entirely self-supporting unit, according to Laura Condon, associate
director. “We need the revenue to pay for the three new parking structures
we have,” said
Condon, referring to 22 Parking, 10 Parking, and Mesa Parking.
“We are exploring alternative sources of revenue in order to keep our parking fees as low as possible.” Transportation and Parking Services will complete the study and report back to the Ratepayer Board at its March meeting. |
