COMMUNITY MOURNS GUNSHOT VICTIMS

Framed by a choral group assembled from across the county, Chancellor Henry Yang welcomed community members and honored guests to a memorial service on Feb. 12 at the Events Center for the seven victims slain on Jan. 30 in Goleta. The dignitaries included, at left of podium, Goleta Mayor Jonny Wallis, and at right, Al Iniguez, U.S. Postal Service Pacific Area vice president for operations. Iniguez presented medals of freedom to the families of the six dead postal workers—Charlotte Colton, Ze Fairchild, Nicola Grant, Maleka Higgins, Dexter Shannon, and Guadalupe Swartz. Rep. Lois Capps gave a flag to each family, including that of Beverly Graham, a retired telephone operator who was the first to die. The City of Goleta gave plaques to all the families. Between 1,000 and 1,100 people attended the service, estimated Chris Wiesen, campus fire marshal.
