Gossard Assumes AVC Duties

Professor Arthur Gossard is the new associate vice chancellor for academic personnel.

Arthur Gossard, professor of materials and of electrical and computer engineering, has taken up administrative duties again. For the next year, at least, Gossard has been appointed associate vice chancellor for academic personnel by Chancellor Henry Yang and Executive Vice Chancellor Gene Lucas.
He briefly served as acting AVC during the summer of 2002, before Mark Rose was appointed permanent AVC for academic personnel. After three years, Rose has left to resume teaching in the Department of English.
Gossard, who joined the UCSB faculty in 1987, has had other administrative experience as a member of the Academic Senate Committees on Academic Personnel between 1997 and 2001. He has also gained professional recognition in his research fields with numerous awards, the most recent of which was the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s Newcomb Cleveland Prize (see 93106’s story of Feb. 21, 2006).
