Chancellor Henry T. Yang last month announced the formation of a new, permanent UCSB commission on Isla Vista and the appointment of its first members. The Isla Vista Commission will coordinate the many ongoing activities that are currently part of the Isla Vista-UCSB relationship, and recommend or assist in the development of new initiatives. “We have already accomplished a great deal in Isla Vista in recent years. I formed the I.V. Commission because I believe we can do even more,” said Yang. “Simply put, our goal is to continuously improve the learning and living environment for all residents of Isla Vista, especially the students.” The commission was formed in response to recommendations by the Isla Vista Action Group, an ad hoc representative panel established by Yang in November 2003. Development of new entertainment programs and options in Isla Vista, changes in campus parking regulations related to I.V., and a plan to keep Halloween local and safe for residents were among the group’s primary concerns. Facilitating communication between the campus, county officials, and the business community on I.V. issues was also a key objective. The action group was led for the past few months by Walter Yuen, chair of the Academic Senate, and before that by faculty members Catherine Cole, associate professor of dramatic art and dance, and Harry Nelson, professor of physics. “As a result of the actions of our dedicated Isla Vista Action Group members, as well as other colleagues, we have facilitated greater coordination among the university entities involved in Isla Vista issues, and we have forged stronger relationships” with other interested parties, said Yang. “I am proud of these achievements, and grateful to all of our colleagues who have contributed to these efforts. I would like to especially thank the co-chairs of the Isla Vista Action Group, professors Catherine Cole, Harry Nelson, and Walter Yuen.” Yuen and Nelson will co-chair the new Isla Vista Commission. Other members include Donna Carpenter acting vice chancellor, administrative services; John Wiemann, vice chancellor, institutional advancement; and Michael Young vice chancellor, student affairs. UCSB professors on the commission include Howard Giles, Richard Hecht, Duncan Mellichamp, Joel Michaelsen, Harry Reese, Denise Segura, Richard Watts, and Kim Yasuda. Student representatives include Melissa Kwon, president of UCSB’s Graduate Students Association, and Chaz Whatley, president of the Associated Students. Peter Haslund is Santa Barbara City College’s faculty representative. Facilitating the commission’s work will be Marc Fisher, associate vice chancellor, campus design and facilities; Yonie Harris, dean of students; Gerry Hesse, director, governmental relations; and Martie Levy, director of capital development. |
