Tsunami Relief Tournament Scheduled; Task Force Recruited
of the profits from three businesses in Isla Vista and the proceeds
from a beach volleyball tournament will go to tsunami disaster relief,
according to Christine Lai of the UCSB Associated Students.
I.V. Market has pledged to donate 10 percent of
its profits between Jan. 31 and Feb. 6 to tsunami relief, while
Sam’s To Go will donate 10 percent of what it nets on Feb. 4 afternoon
sales. Likewise, I.V. Bakery will donate 10 percent of its Feb.
5 afternoon profits.
The beach volleyball tournament on East Beach
is set for Feb. 5-6 and starts at 9 a.m. Bren School faculty, students,
and staff and the American Red Cross Club of UCSB will organize
the event. Entry fees will be $40 for 2-person teams and $50 for
In the meantime, Chancellor Henry T. Yang has announced the Tsunami Response Task Force membership. Though others may be added, at present the group consists of 13 people, including co-chairs Professor Michael O’Connell, director of the UCSB Education Abroad Program, and Larry Parsons, director of the Environmental Health & Safety Department.
Other task force appointees are Ralph Archuleta, professor of geological sciences; Tanya Atwater, professor of geological sciences; Carolyn Buford, associate dean of students; Paul Desruisseaux, associate vice chancellor for public affairs; Sandra Geissler, Graduate Student Association representative; Mary Jacob, director of the Office of International Students and Scholars; Christine Lai, Associated Students representative; Professor Joel Michaelsen, vice chair, Academic Senate; Mattison Mines, professor of anthropology; Susan Stonich, professor of environmental studies; and James To, associate director of the A.S. Community Affairs Board.
The task force is developing campus links to Direct Relief International, the American Red Cross, and other tsunami relief agencies. It also, in the chancellor’s words, is serving “as a clearing house for the many fund-raising relief efforts already underway on our campus.”
