Union Stages Strike
Service workers with the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) struck across the UC system last Thursday as 93106 was going to press. Some patient care workers reportedly participated, but no patients were left without care, said UC officials.
Some UCSB members of AFSCME reportedly did not come to work in the morning, and small clusters picketed the north and west entrances. A noontime march and rally that ended in front of Cheadle Hall involved about 100 people.
Chancellor Henry T. Yang, Donna Carpenter, acting vice chancellor, administrative services, and Cynthia Cronk, HR director, addressed this group, saying they appreciated the workers’ contributions to the campus and hoped a new contract would soon be achieved.
