Commencement Wear Available Reservations for regalia and for faculty participation in the commencement ceremonies are due on May 4, according to an announcement from the Public Events Office. Wednesday Walks Shift Location Staff Assembly’s regular meeting place for its Wednesday Walks has ambled over to the track near Rob Gym; as of April 6, walkers no longer gather in front of the Women’s Center. Some aspects of the walks remain the same, however. “We will continue to give away a $10 gift certificate to the UCSB Bookstore each week,” said organizer Martha Olsen.

Shankar
Aswani, associate professor of anthropology, last week
received the 2005 Alumnus of Distinction Award from the University
of Miami Alumni Association. He was cited for a “distinguished career
as an anthropologist” and his “dedicated work in marine conservation.”
PUBLICATIONS
Lisa
Hajjar, associate professor of law and society, has packed
a decade’s worth of original research on the law and the Israeli/Palestinian
conflict into her new book, “Courting Conflict: The Israeli Military
Court System in the West Bank and Gaza” (University of California
Press, 2005).
Patricia
Hall, associate professor of music theory, was co-editor
with University of Moncton music professor Friedemann Sallis of
“A Handbook to 20th-Century Musical Sketches” (Cambridge University
Press, 2004).
Tsuyoshi
Hasegawa, professor of history and director of UCSB’s Center
for Cold War Studies, has published a highly praised, multinational
study of the end of World War II in the Pacific. It is titled “Racing
the Enemy: Stalin, Truman, and the Surrender of Japan” (Harvard
University Press, 2005).
TRANSITIONS
Carla
Robbins, a member of the Social Sciences Division staff,
has been named assistant to Dean Melvin L. Oliver. She joined UCSB
with a teaching credential and after working in industry as a technical
writer and editor.
Ted
Wynn, formerly of the College of William and Mary, has
joined the Development Office as director of development, regional,
and annual giving. Though trained as an attorney, most of his experience
is in regional and university fundraising.
