Berlin-based Clemens von Wedemeyer, an internationally renowned German filmmaker and video artist, will spend a week in residence at UC Santa Barbara beginning today, May 12. His visit will include lectures, roundtable discussions, screenings of his films, and talks by other video artists. The events are free and open to the public.

His work, which investigates the nature of film and its relationship to language and reality, has appeared in many European film and art venues, and is beginning to become known in the United States.

While on campus, Von Wedemeyer will work with students from various departments to produce a short film tentatively titled “The Inner Campus.” He describes it as a “phenomenology of academic life, its real and imagined spaces, its specific ways of seeing, hearing, and communicating.”

Several of his films will be in continuous screening this week at the UCen, Kerr Hall, Davidson Library, and the Student Resource Building.

The theme of Von Wedemeyer’s visit is “Video After Video in the Post-Media Age,” and he will address the topic in a public lecture at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, at Embarcadero Hall, 935 Embarcadero del Norte.

A reception in the MultiCultural Center at 4 p.m. will preceed his talk. A screening of René Daalder’s film “Here Is Always Somewhere Else: The Life of Bas Jan Ader” will follow Von Wedemeyer’s lecture at 7:30 p.m. on campus in Buchanan Hall 1940.

Among other events during the week is a roundtable discussion including Von Wedemeyer; Jenny Schlenzka of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City; Rudolf Frieling of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and scholars from UCSB, UC Riverside, and UC Davis. In addition, video artists Jordan Crandall, Doug Aitken, and James T. Hong will give special presentations.
