United Way Campaign Ends Feb. 29

With a bit more than a week to go, the campus United Way campaign is better than half way to its goal of $125,000, according to Dave Bothman, co-chair of the campaign.
At press time, the roughly $60,000 pledged or donated does not include Candy Gram sales. However, the updated “thermometer” on the campaign Web page <www.ia.ucsb.edu/uw> this week should include those sales as well as new pledges.
“We average about $18,000 per week,” said Bothman, “so we’ll certainly be well past the 50 percent (mark) by Feb. 19th.”
Not included in any UW progress report so far are the results of Woodstock Pizza’s Isla Vista fundraiser on Jan. 22 and the Thursday contributions of its outlet at The Arbor.
Also part of UCSB’s United Way involvement is the Third Annual Volunteer Day, which is set for March 1. Volunteers will need to register before then (<www.ia.ucsb.edu/uw>) to be able to help this year’s worthy agencies: the Isla Vista Youth Projects (IVYP) and the Orfalea Family Children’s Center.
Volunteer Day runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the IVYP, 6842 Phelps Road, and the West Campus children’s center, according to Joel Dinan, a local United Way official coordinating the effort. Indoor and outdoor tasks are planned so volunteers should dress in appropriate work clothes.
