Campus Security Report Online
The Clery Act Campus Security Report is now available online at <http://www.sa.ucsb.edu/policies/CleryAct/>. The annual report includes statistics for the past three years on reported crimes that occurred on campus, in off-campus buildings, on property owned or controlled by the university, and on public property adjacent to the campus. The report also includes campus policies concerning campus security, such as those related to alcohol and other drug use, crime prevention, the reporting of crimes, sexual assault, victims’ assistance programs, student discipline, and campus resources.
HONORS & AWARDS
Gayle Binion,
a professor of law and society, is a recipient of the Mentor Award from the Women’s Caucus for Political Science. The award recognizes excellent mentorship of women graduate students and junior faculty. Binion also has received the 2008 Oliver Johnson Award for Distinguished Leadership in the Academic Senate. The award is presented biannually to UC faculty members who have provided distinguished and sustained Academic Senate leadership.
Craig Hawker,professor of materials and director of UCSB’s Materials Research Laboratory, has received the DSM Performance Material Award in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the advancement of the materials sciences. Hawker is a leader in the field of polymeric performance materials.
TRANSITIONS
Lisa Altshuler has been appointed director of research and prospect management, a unit within the development office. A research strategist for the past two years, she will lead the unit in current and long range planning.
Daniel T. Colbert
has been named executive director of UCSB’s Institute for Energy Efficiency. Previously, Colbert was chief technology officer at NGEN Partners, a Santa Barbara-based venture capital firm that focuses on “cleantech” products and services. He earned his doctoral degree in physical chemistry and did postdoctoral work at UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
IN MEMORIAM
Alec P. Alexander, a professor emeritus of economics, died on October 7 in Missouri. He joined the UCSB faculty in 1960 and retired in 1991. During his tenure, he served as Dean of the College of Letters and Science, Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, and Acting Chancellor. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor, two children, and his sister.
James D. Smith, professor emeritus of art and Black studies, died on October 5. Born in Monroe, LA, and affectionately known as J.D., Smith joined the UCSB faculty in 1969 and retired in 1994. He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
