A Mighty Tree is Transplanted

An adult ficus tree boasting a 40-foot-plus canopy and weighing about 50 tons (with root ball) was transplanted from a spot next to Harold Frank Hall (formerly Engineering I) to Steck Circle on May 14. Part of the transformation of UCSB’s East Entrance—a grand opening is planned for July 29—the tree was lifted into place by a specialized 120-ton hydrocrane. Four concrete pads anchor the cables that will brace the already acclimatized ficus against onshore winds.
