The late Mexican balladeer Lalo Guerrero and the late UCLA Spanish and Portuguese professor Guillermo Hernández, who specialized in corridos (Mexican narrative ballads), will be honored at the Sixth International Corrido Conference next week in UCSB’s Humanities and Social Sciences Building, room 6020. Tributes to the two men will mix with scholarly panels on the popular impact of the ballads, contemporary ballad themes, and their spread on new media during the free discussions on campus May 8 and 9. A reception and two dinners will be held at Casa de la Raza, 601 E. Montecito St., in Santa Barbara. A family-oriented festival on May 10 |
