Multiple Grants Aid Projects Over the last few months the University Art Museum (UAM) and the Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration have received funds from the federal Museums for America program for enhanced organization of their collections while Davidson Library’s Special Collections has secured a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for the preservation of early sound recordings. The UAM was awarded $150,000 and the Cheadle Center $30,600 in funds, which will be matched. The NEH award for the library’s cylinder digitization project came to $323,000.
HONORS & AWARDS
Shane Jimerson, associate professor of counseling, clinical, and school psychology in the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education, has received a 2007 Award of Excellence from the National Association of School Psychologists’ Crisis Management Division. He was recognized for his contributions to a national network of school-based mental health workers who treat school crises.
Nelson Lichtenstein, professor of history, has become a Fellow of the Society of American Historians, a professional society with no more than 250 members. His invitation was based on “the literary and scholarly distinction” of his historical writing.
Sanjit K. Mitra, professor of electrical and computer engineering, has received an honorary doctorate from the rector of the University of Iasi, in the capital of Moldova.
Wendy Nishikawa, work/life coordinator for Human Resources, has been selected president-elect of the College and University Work/Family Association. She will be president of the professional society in 2008-09.
IN MEMORIAM
Larry Adams, a former visiting professor of political science and religious studies, died on Sept. 7 at Sarah House hospice in Santa Barbara. The UCSB alum and hemophiliac was 71. He also taught political science for 25 years at CUNY before retiring to Santa Barbara in 1996. He is survived by many cousins. A memorial will be held on Oct. 13 at 11 a.m. in Santa Barbara’s Trinity Episcopal church. Donations may be made to the Larry Adams Scholars Fund at UCSB, Santa Barbara, CA 93106.
Sandra J. Thomas, an administrative assistant in Transportation and Parking Services, died on Aug. 1 at her home in Lompoc. The Santa Barbara native was 64. She worked for UCSB nearly 14 years. She is survived by two sons and a daughter, a sister, two brothers, and numerous grandchildren.
Edward L. Triplett, professor emeritus of biology, died on Sept. 9 at his home in Goleta. He was 77. He taught at UCSB for 38 years before retiring in 1993, developing an international reputation as a cell biologist. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Edith, two sons, a daughter, seven grandchildren, and a brother.
