Japan, Montenegro to Host 2 UCSB Fulbright Scholars

Michael McGinnis

Douglas Daniels

This fall, Douglas Daniels, professor of black studies and history, will lecture and conduct research at Yokohama City University in Yokohama, Japan, on a Fulbright scholarship. And he will not be the only UCSB faculty member to travel abroad on a Fulbright.
Early next year, Michael McGinnis, a lecturer and researcher in environmental policy and administration, will use his Fulbright to spend six months in Montenegro, one of the former provinces of the now-defunct Balkan nation of Yugoslavia.
In addition, 10 university professors from seven nations will come to UCSB to conduct research during 2007-08.
McGinnis, acting director of the Ocean and Coastal Policy Center, expects to teach graduate courses at the University of Montenegro’s Institute of Marine Studies in Kotor on the Adriatic Sea coast. He also hopes to assist in the development of coastal and marine programs for the region. “I think we’ll learn something of importance from the Adriatic,” he said.
Daniels will teach courses on African American history and the history of jazz as well as research the spread of jazz among the Pacific Rim countries. “The westward course of the music to Hawaii, the Philippines, and Asian nations has largely been neglected,” he said.
He is the author of the recent “One O’ Clock Jump: The Unforgettable History of the Oklahoma City Blue Devils,” as well s a biography of saxophonist Lester ‘Pres’ Young.
McGinnis earned both a M.A. and a Ph.D. in political science from UCSB, and currently lectures for that department, the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management, and the Environmental Studies Program.
