Series Salutes Civic Courage
In honor of local physician Dr. George J. Wittenstein, a series of speakers will visit campus in the coming months to commemorate Wittenstein’s “legacy of civic courage,” said organizer Elizabeth Weber, professor and chair of Germanic, Slavic, and Semitic studies. Wittenstein was a member of two German resistance groups during the Nazi dictatorship. “Shoah Literature: The Universal Aspect” is the title of the first talk on Tuesday, Oct. 23, by Yale University’s Geoffrey Hartman. UC Irvine’s Alexander Gelley will speak on Jan. 15, 2008; then Duke University’s Claudia Koonz on Feb. 25; Stanford’s Amir Eshel on April 8; and UCLA’s Saul Friedlander on a date to be determined. |
