Internal promotion policies have been drafted for the UCSB campus to make them consistent with UC Office of the President policies implemented last year. The proposed local policy 20 <http://hr.ucsb.edu/comp/temp_policy_revisions.php>, says Steve Carlson, HR compensation analyst, completely replaces all former procedures. “Our proposals will encourage departments to promote from within after assuring that certain criteria are met,” he said. Oliver Chadwick, professor of geography and environmental studies, recently was elected a Fellow, the highest position given by the Soil Science Society of America. He was one of 14 members to receive the professional society’s honor.

Roland Geyer, Bren assistant professor of industrial ecology and supply chain management, has become one of three recipients of the 2006 AT&T Industrial Ecology Faculty Fellowships. Winning fellowships, which are based on research proposals, come with $25,000 for the project.

James McKernan, professor of mathematics, and a colleague, Christopher Hacon from the University of Utah, have been awarded the prestigious Clay Research Award for their advanced work in understanding “the birational geometry of algebraic varieties in dimension greater than three.” They will receive a bronze sculpture and “one year of flexible research support,” according to a release from the Clay Mathematics Institute.

Marine biologist Steven Gaines, director of the Marine Science Institute, has been appointed acting dean of the Division of Mathematical, Life, and Physical Sciences. He replaces Dean Martin Moskovits, who is taking a leave of absence for a temporary position in private industry.

Melodie Nelson, former senior accountant for the UCSB Foundation, has been hired as the foundation’s new assistant director of finance. Most recently, she served three years in private industry as business manager for a healthcare statistical research firm.

Frances “Pat” Stock, former supervisor of physical education in the then-Department of Physical Activities (now exercise and sports studies), died of unspecified causes on April 2 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The native of Portland, Ore., was 69. She was a member of the UCSB faculty for nearly 26 years when she retired in 1991, and was the first woman in her department to gain tenure and later chair that unit. She also pioneered the field of women’s self-defense and was a recognized authority. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Vincent, two sisters, and many cousins.
