Education Abroad Directors Sought Friday, Jan. 12, is the deadline for faculty members who wish to be considered for a study abroad center directorship. The Education Abroad Program has openings in 2008 and 2009 in 11 different nations (see details at <http://eap.ucop.edu.faculty>). Directors normally serve for two years. HONORS & AWARDS
 Oscar Ibarra, professor of computer science, has received a Nokia Visiting Fellow Scholarship, which will allow him to spend three months at the University of Turku, Finland. He was one of nine Fellows to receive the award.  Francisco Lomelí, professor of Chicana and Chicano studies, was selected by the University of New Mexico libraries to receive the 2006 Anaya Chicana-Chicano Literature Criticism Award, which required delivery of a public lecture and came with a honorarium of $1,000. Lisa Przekop, associate director of the Office of Admissions, was recently selected a Local Hero 2006 by the Santa Barbara Independent newspaper. The 21-year UCSB employee and alumna was cited for “opening college doors” for those from low-income families. Briana Villaseñor, management services officer for the UC Linguistic Minority Research Institute, has been elected to the Santa Barbara Middle School Board of Trustees. A UCSB alumna, she has been a staff employee since 2001. PUBLICATIONS
 Jati Sengupta, professor of economics, with co-author Biresh Sahoo has examined economic efficiency techniques applied to computer, pharmaceutical, and banking industries in their new book “Efficiency Models in Data Development Analysis” (Palgrave, London, 2006).TRANSITIONS
 Mary McMahon, former assistant dean in the Graduate Division for 10 years, has accepted the position of regional director at the Education Abroad Program for Asia and Africa. The promotion moves her to EAP headquarters off campus, and marks her nearly 28 years with UC.IN MEMORIAM
Walter C. Gogel, professor emeritus of psychology, died on Oct. 20, 2006. The former U.S. Army psychologist was 88. A pioneer in visual perception studies, he joined the UCSB faculty in 1965 and retired in 1989. He is survived by a wife, Stella, and two sons.
