Scientific Workflow Infrastructure Funded for 3 Years The National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis at UC Santa Barbara has announced that its researchers will share a National Science Foundation grant of $1.7 million with counterparts at UC Davis and UC San Diego to develop an open-source scientific workflow system that allows scientists to design an efficient, computerized infrastructure for complex data analysis. Known as Kepler/CORE, the project has been funded for three years.
HONORS & AWARDS
Emma Lou Diemer, professor emeritus of music, has received a 2007-08 award in the concert music division (known as ASCAPLUS) from the American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers. The award is based on the composer’s “catalog of original compositions, as well as recent performances…”
PUBLICATIONS
Charles Bazerman, professor of education at Gevirtz Graduate School of Education, has edited the recent “Handbook of Research on Writing” (Routledge, 2007). It’s 37 chapters cover what international research on writing has learned about writing in society, schools, as text, and for individuals throughout history.
Wallace Chafe, professor emeritus of linguistics, analyzes the emotion of “nonseriousness,” as he calls it, in his new book “The Importance of Not Being Earnest: The Feeling Behind Laughter and Humor” (John Benjamins, 2007).
TRANSITIONS
Ricardo Alcaino, former director of diversity, equity, and employment practices for Cal State University Monterey Bay, is the new UCSB director of equal opportunity. He has extensive experience in outreach and culturally sensitive training, which he conducted for the cities of Los Angeles and Santa Cruz as well as CSUMB.
Barbara K. Ige, a former UCLA mentoring program administrator and director of that campus’s National Science Foundation Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate, has joined the Graduate Division as its new director of communications and external relations. She also has had teaching experiences in colleges in Hawaii and California.
Mei Liao, a former research specialist in biological sciences, has been appointed biosafety officer at the Environmental Health and Safety Department, where she performs biosafety inspections and monitors campus use of biological agents.
