Check Out Lost and Found Whether you have lost something or found someone else’s property, your first stop should be the UCSB Police Department. “We encourage departments to turn in found property in a timely manner,” says Capt. HONORS & AWARDS
Philip Lubin, professor of physics, shared in the Gruber Cosmology Prize, and a $250,000 cash award, for the work he and 18 other scientists have performed on confirming the “Big Bang” theory of how the universe formed.
 Evolutionary psychologist John
Tooby, professor of anthropology, was recently named an Association for Psychological Sciences Fellow, an honor granted APS members who have made “sustained, outstanding contributions to the science of psychology.”
Robert Warner, professor of ecology, evolution, and marine biology, in August began a one-year visiting professorship, called the Mote Eminent Scholar in Fisheries Ecology and Enhancement, at Florida State University. The international award, which will require multiple visits to FSU, comes with a $30,000 honorarium.
TRANSITIONS
Sarah Fenstermaker, professor of sociology and women’s studies, has been recently appointed director of the Institute for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Research (ISBER). A 30-year faculty member, she has previously served as associate dean of the Graduate Division and vice chair of the UCSB Academic Senate, among many other posts.
IN MEMORIAM
Mark Fontana, who managed the Coral Tree Cafe until cancer forced him to retire in 2004, died in Oxnard on Sept. 26. The Fontana, Calif., native was 56. He was with UCen Dining Services for more than 20 years, most of that in the kitchen. While he enjoyed food preparation and customer service, he also sang and played the guitar. He is survived by his wife, Colleen Wren-Fontana, a daughter, Lisa, his father, and a sister. The family asks that any donations be directed to The Dream Foundation of Santa Barbara. A memorial will be held on Oct.
14 at 2 p.m. in Ventura at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home.
