Sociologist Reaps Festival Awards

K. Bhavnani

The United Nations Development Programme in Poland plans to host a special screening in Warsaw on Oct. 24 of “The Shape of Water,” the award-winning documentary about women’s social activism aiding Third World development by filmmaker Kum Kum Bhavnani, UCSB professor of sociology.
“They approached me out of the blue,” says Bhavnani, though she suspects that entering “Water” in a Stanford University festival may have triggered the inquiry. She has seen momentum grow since the documentary’s world premier last February at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
The novice filmmaker has won honors at four film festivals so far. “The Shape of Water” collected best director of a documentary (San Francisco Women’s Film Festival); best feature documentary (Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Festival, Brooklyn); the World Cinema Award (Washington, D.C., Independent Film Festival); and the festival highlight award from the SBIFF.
