Four UCSB professors and one graduate student have been honored with some form of Fulbright scholarship this academic year. The U.S. State Department-sponsored Fulbright Scholar Program also has awarded four scholars from as many countries funding to conduct research at UCSB.

The campus’s faculty recipients include Keith Clarke, professor and former chair of geography; Carlos Morton, professor of dramatic art and dance; David Rock, professor of history; and Wade Clark Roof, professor of religious studies and director of the Capps Center for the Study of Ethics, Religion, and Public Life.

Clarke also received a Leverhulme Trust Award for travel and research in Britain, which he began last summer. Next March, he will leave London for Trieste, Italy, where a Fulbright Distinguished Scholarship will enable him to lecture on land use modeling at the University of Trieste until June.

Morton left in September for an academic year at a university in Lubin, Poland, where he holds the Distinguished Chair in American Studies. His research and lecture theme there is ethnic theater on the American stage.

Historian Rock, who also left campus in September, is spending his year in a Buenos Aires university where he is researching and lecturing on Argentine ethnic groups—the British, in particular.

Roof was appointed to the Fulbright-Tocqueville Distinguished Chair in American Studies at a Parisian university. He will leave next February for five months in France where he will lecture in four different cities and teach an advanced graduate seminar on U.S. religion and politics.

David Roh, a UCSB graduate student, has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Scholarship. He has gone to Japan for the 2006-07 academic year to study literature.

International scholars who either came to UCSB last summer, are here now, or will arrive soon include Fatima Lamrai of Morocco who worked in linguistics; Aral Okay of Turkey, who is working with the earth sciences faculty; and Gustavo Pino of Argentina and Igor Rahinov of Israel, who will both join the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry for varying periods of time.
