$11,000 Collected in Cedarwood Aid

In an Oct. 30 memo to the campus, Chancellor Henry T. Yang announced that as of that date $11,330 had been contributed to a special bank account to aid the families evicted from their homes in Isla Vista’s Cedarwood Apartments. “Every contribution, large or small, is deeply and sincerely appreciated,” wrote the chancellor, who promised that his administration’s fund-raising efforts would continue.
Donations should go to the “Families of Cedarwood Apartments Fund,” an account established last month with the Santa Barbara Bank and Trust. Any branch of the bank will accept contributions, or they can be mailed to P.O. Box 60839, Santa Barbara, CA 93160-0839.
How the funds will be distributed has yet to be decided, according to Yang. “I have asked Vice Chancellor (Michael) Young and some of our administrative colleagues to work with our student leaders to come up with the best way to distribute the money to assist the families affected by the recent evictions,” he wrote.
In the meantime, the UCSB Academic Senate has proposed working with students and other interested parties on and off campus to organize a town hall forum to “explore ideas and issues related to the future of Isla Vista as a community,” according to an Oct. 20 memo signed by Yang and Joel Michaelsen, Senate chair. The forum would include a wide swath of government, I.V., and campus people with varying perspectives on the future of a diverse I.V. community. No date has yet been scheduled for the forum.
