June 8 was a big day for four individuals and one office that have excelled this past year in service to students. All 16 nominees for the Margaret T. Getman Award and the three offices nominated for the William J. Villa Service to Students Award were applauded.
However, the laminated Getman plaques went to: Don Lubach of Career Services; Brian MacDonald of Housing and Residential Services; Harold Salas-Kennedy, of the Educational Opportunity Program; and Pam Van Dyk of Associated Students’ Community Affairs Board.
Instructional Resources Department’s Digital Editing Lab secured the William J. Villa Award this year.
These awards recognize university staff, faculty, and departments that have “demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to the general growth and development of students and the quality of student life” at UCSB. Other awards also emphasized service to the community.
Receiving the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Mentoring this year was zoologist Armand Kuris, professor of ecology, evolution, and marine biology. A UCSB faculty member since 1975, he is also associate dean of the College of Creative Studies.
Three outstanding graduating seniors received the campus’s highest student awards.
Juan Carlos Ibarra, a major in history with an emphasis in public policy, was selected for the Thomas More Storke Award for Excellence, UCSB’s highest student honor. Alisha Anne Dahlstrom, a double major in environmental studies and marine biology, was presented with the Jeremy D. Friedman Memorial Award. Crister De Leon, who had a double major in theatre and in Spanish, received the Alyce Marita Whitted Memorial Award.
