Barnard College and Columbia University's Alfred Mac Adam will lecture on imitation and deception in the work of novelist Guillermo Cabrera Infante.
Historian Bianca Murillo will discuss "Gender and the Politics of Consumption in 20th-Century Ghana," in which she examines the growth of consumer culture in Ghana between 1930-1975, a period that encompasses British colonial rule, rapid urbanization, and post-colonial state formation. Then, sociologist Timothy Mechlinski will address "Making it Across the Border: The Social Interaction of Mobility Control in West Africa." His discussion will expand on the current social science thinking on migrant networks.
Tellef Tellefson, a visual artist native to Santa Barbara County, has been living and working out of a shipping container for the past year. It has led the former Art Institute of Chicago student to develop a project, titled "Movable Types and Instant Spaces," to conceptualize architecture using lightweight, cheap materials to add or remove functionality from specific public sites.
