Should military recruiters continue to be allowed to do their work at UCSB? That is the main question that will be before a Wednesday, May 4, Town Hall meeting on campus.

Sponsored by the local division of the UC Academic Senate and organized by professors Tom Scheff and Charles Bazerman, the meeting will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the McCune Conference Room (HSSB 6020). Opposing speakers will offer their takes on the issues, said Senate Chair Walter Yuen.

The discussion aims to lift the level of awareness on campus of alleged discriminatory Defense Department policies and of a resolution awaiting Senate action. This tabled resolution proposes recommending to the chancellor that military recruiters be barred from UCSB.

The full text of the resolution proposed to the Senate by Scheff, Bazerman, and a dozen or so other professors is at <www.senate.ucsb.edu>.

Essentially, the resolution “proposes that U.S. military recruiters shall be barred from campus, and from receiving any assistance, support, or information from university staff, officials, or representatives, until the U.S. military ceases discriminatory practices.”

Speakers who had signed up by the time 93106 went to press were Jacqueline Stevens, assistant professor of law and society; Kyle Richards, director, UCSB Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Resources; Bernard Trujillo, cochair of the Associated Students’ racial equality commission; and political science major Brian A. Ray.
