Regents Okay Los Alamos Lab Bid
The UC Board of Regents decided late last month to pursue continued management of Los Alamos National Laboratory by submitting a proposal to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Acting on the recommendation of President Robert C. Dynes, the Regents authorized Dynes to submit the proposal by the July 19, 2005 deadline. A UC- and Bechtel-led team that includes BWX Technologies, Inc., and Washington Group International, as well as a consortium of New Mexico higher education institutions will be part of the UC bid. On May 11, UC announced that it would join with Bechtel National and its partners to bring a best-in-class business management and industrial operations lineup to Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The Regents also voted to appoint Michael R. Anastasio director of LANL, contingent upon the success of the team bid for future management of Los Alamos. Anastasio, a nuclear physicist, has more than 25 years of experience in national security and has led the DOE’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory since 2002. Due to the competitive nature of the bid process, UC did not publicly detail other aspects of its proposal. |
