GETMANS HONOR STAFF SERVICE

Garrett Naiman, left, and Carlos Marquez were happy to accept their Getman service-to-students awards.

University staff and departments that have made major contributions to students’ growth and development in 2004-05 were recognized at a Corwin Pavilion reception on June 2 with the Margaret T. Getman/William J. Villa awards. As a group the people were selected for their “extraordinary commitment” to students’ growth and development.
The five Getmans went to Candice Brooks, counselor, Educational Opportunity Program; Wayne Horodowich, manager, Exercise & Sports Studies and Recreation Department; Carlos Marquez, manager, Housing & Residential Services; Garrett Naiman, admissions counselor; and Dennis Nord, director of Counseling & Career Services.
Marquez and Naiman were present to accept their awards. Horodowich and Nord had already retired, with 29 and 30-plus years of UCSB service, respectively. Brooks was attending a conference in New York City.
The William J. Villa Departmental Service to Students Award was presented to the H&RS’s Residential Operations Maintenance and Custodial Unit for its devotion to students.
In other awards this year, Mary Bucholtz, assistant professor of linguistics, received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research, which is given to a faculty member with a distinguished record of mentoring undergraduate research students.
