PROGRAM RECYCLES SOME HI-TECH TRASH

A new program to recycle used household batteries and electronic waste—including handheld CD players and games, diskettes, pagers, cell phones, DVDs, and audio and video tapes—has established a campus presence in the form of seven canisters painted fire engine red.
The red trash cans will be moved to a new building every two weeks in an attempt to collect as much of this type of waste as possible. “We will eventually get into every campus building, even the small ones,” said Mary Ann Hopkins, recycling director for physical facilities.
The schedule of when and where the fiery seven will be on duty can be found at <http://www.as.ucsb.edu/recycling/technotrash.html>.
The Universal Waste Recycling Program (also called “TechnoTrash”) is an expansion of the campuswide Associated Student Recycling Program, currently coordinated by Katie Robinette and Trevor Blythe. It started as a pilot program in October 2004, and made its campuswide debut last month.
Using a student lock-in fee specifically for recycling, A.S. pays to deliver the small electronic items to Santa Barbara Computer Recycling in Carpinteria, said Hopkins. Larger electronic items, like computers and monitors, are still collected by Central Stores for proper disposal.
