Twenty secure lockers for bicycle storage were distributed to UCSB renters from among 35 applicants (12 were faculty and staff) on March 24, in the Transportation Alternative Program’s first-ever bike locker lottery. The heavy-duty plastic lockers with plywood dividers are paired in horizontal boxes with locked doors at each end, allowing each renter a private compartment. The initial lockers offered were grouped at four places on the main campus: behind Robertson Gymnasium, the Chemistry Building, Bio Sciences II, and the Student Affairs & Administrative Services Building. Subsequent lockers will be in different locations, said James Wagner, TAP manager. At this point, the Associate Students are rehabilitating 32 lockers salvaged from Francisco Torres, he added. They would be installed near Davidson Library, if current plans hold. Another lottery date has not yet been set. Locker-holders pay $50 to rent each space for an academic year. To qualify for the locker lotteries, participants must live beyond a two-mile radius from the campus; not own a campus parking permit; and be a student, staff, or faculty member of UCSB. To request an application form, e-mail james.wagner@park.ucsb.edu or call Wagner at x5475. Bicycle theft is one of the most commonly reported problems on campus, according to UCSB Police Department logs. There were 14 incidents of stolen bikes from around the main campus reported in February alone. |
