Sedgwick Book Benefits
Ranching Center
A personalized look at 20th-century ranching in parts
of Santa Barbara County is captured in “Cattle Upon
a Thousand Hills,” with pictures coming from the
albums of some of the region’s principal ranching
families. The soft-cover book is also a fund-raiser for
UCSB’s Sedgwick Ranch Natural Reserve’s Ranching
Heritage Center, which will be housed in a wood barn that

Book Aid for
Nontraditional Students
Five scholarships will be awarded next month for re-entry
or nontraditional students in the form of $200 gift certificates
good at the UCSB Bookstore. Sponsored by the Professional
Women’s Association and the bookstore, completed
applications must be returned by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov.
23, to one of five drop-off locations. For the form and

HONORS & AWARDS
David
Seibold, professor of communication, this month received
the National Communication Association’s Distinguished
Scholar Award. The career achievement award was presented
for “outstanding scholarship” in human communication.
Christopher
Still, assistant professor of geography, was one
of 31 scholars selected nationally to receive NASA’s
New Investigator Program in Earth Sciences Award. His proposal
on photosynthesis won $350,000 over three years.
Michael
Witherell, director of Fermilab and UCSB vice chancellor-designate
for research, was one of eight current or past national laboratory
directors to receive gold awards last month from the U.S.
Department of Energy. The award is the department’s
highest honor and was bestowed “for outstanding leadership.”
TRANSITIONS
Umesh
Mishra, professor and chair of electrical and computer
engineering, has been appointed associate dean for advancement
in the College of Engineering. He will focus on technology
transfer, development, corporate relations, and communications,
among other duties.

Jon
Sonstelie, professor of economics, has assumed the
directorship of the Social Science Survey Center, a branch
of the Institute for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Research.
He is an expert in public school finance and urban economics.
Genevieve Webster, a former student caller
and recruiter for the UCSB Annual Fund and a 2003 graduate,
has been hired as the annual fund assistant. She majored in
law and society. |
