CAMPUS NOTES

Support Available for Courses
Career staff planning to take UCSB professional development courses have until Dec. 1 to apply for the Dilling Yang Staff Scholarship Awards administered by Human Resources. Nonprobationary career staffers earning a full-time equivalent salary of up to $3,500 a month may request awards up to $500. Details and application forms are available online at <http://hr.ucsb.edu/tod/pdf/YangScholarshipGuidelines.pdf>.

Article Spotlights Parking Changes
High-tech changes in the campus parking system were the focus of a recent article in the trade journal Parking Today. The magazine, which has about 15,000 circulation, tracked the replacement of staffed kiosks and hand-processed parking permits with online registration and a solar-powered, 53-unit wireless network of pay stations. Revenue is up significantly and Transportation and Parking Services officials project the upgrade will pay for itself in less than two years, the article said.

HONORS & AWARDS

Jacob N. Israelachvili, professor of chemical engineering, will go to Boston later this month to receive the 2004 Material Research Society Medal for work that has “revolutionized the understanding of molecular mechanisms” underlying adhesion and friction. A $3,000 cash prize accompanies the engraved medal and citation.

William Kraft, professor emeritus of music, has been granted a cash merit award by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers in recognition of his compositions over the past year. He retired in 2002 after 11 years at UCSB, and is busy with three new concert commissions.

Barbara Voorhies, professor emeritus of anthropology, has been awarded the 2004-05 Dickson Emeriti Professorship, an annual award created for retired UCSB faculty members. She has continued field research since retiring in 1994, and recently completed two books on Mesoamerica archaeology.

TRANSITIONS

Eric Hessell, formerly assistant diving safety officer, has been promoted to diving safety officer for the Environmental Health & Safety Department. He joined UCSB in 1998 and replaces Dennis Divins, who recently retired after 33 years.

April McDivitt, former Gaucho starting point guard and a 2004 UCSB graduate in psychology, has been hired as assistant women’s basketball coach. She succeeds Gaucho associate coach Cori Close, who went to Florida State last spring.

IN MEMORIAM

Elias R. Silva, a storekeeper in Facilities Management, was slain on Oct. 3 under what are still unclear circumstances. The Goleta man was 30 years old and had worked at UCSB since 2002. He had three young children, and lived with a girlfriend. Memorial contributions can be made at any branch of the Santa Barbara Bank & Trust.
