| The solar-
and wind-powered Markolab, above, recently garnered second
prize and $1,000 in a United Nations contest to promote digital
arts. Assistant professor of art Marko Peljhan, wearing a
UCSB sweatshirt, conceived the entry, which was selected from
among 300 projects that demonstrated “artistic balance
and innovative research.” Currently installed in Scotland,
Markolab combines the work of artists and scientists in the
field of telecommunications, bird migrations, and climate,
according to Peljhan.
