Teaching Award Winners of 2004 Hailed by SenateThe Academic Senate and UCSB Foundation honored six instructors with Distinguished Teaching Awards on May 27 at a reception in the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center's McCune Conference Room. Outstanding Teaching Assistant Awards also went to four teaching assistants at the reception prior to last regular meeting of the Faculty Legislature this year.
In addition to the award, each of the 10 recipients received $1,000 from the foundation. The Senate's Faculty Issues and Awards Council, under Vice Chair Gregory Kelly, associate professor of education, evaluated the faculty candidates.
Faculty recipients for 2003-04 with Senate membership included Glenn Beltz, assistant professor, mechanical and environmental engineering; John Lee, assistant professor, history; Rita Raley, assistant professor, English; Frank Ries, professor, dramatic art; and Giovanni Vigna, assistant professor, computer science.
Thomas Even, lecturer in both departments of biological sciences, was chosen this year for the teaching award given to non-Senate faculty.
Outstanding teaching assistants selected by a Graduate Council committee included Michael Cole, philosophy; Sherry Hikita, molecular, cellular, and developmental biology; Jens-Uwe Kuhn, chemistry; and Collin Young, political science.
