Staff, Students End Year with HonorsUniversity staff, faculty, and departments that have made major contributions to students' growth and development were recognized at a Corwin Pavilion reception on June 3 with the Margaret T. Getman/William J. Villa awards. As a group the people were selected for their "extraordinary commitment" to students' growth and development.
The Getmans 2003-04 went to Deidre "De" Acker, director, Women's Center; Ron Andrade, director, Financial Aid Office; Maureen Driscoll, lecturer, Writing Program; César Figueroa, Housing and Residential Services; Sabrina Kwist, Housing and Residential Services; and Beverly Q. Lewis, registrar.
The William J. Villa Departmental Service to Students Award was presented to the Educational Opportunity Program for its devotion to students.
This year Glenn Beltz, associate professor of mechanical and environmental engineering, received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research, which is given to a faculty member with a distinguished record of mentoring undergraduate research students.
Top awards for students this year went to:
Julie Lynne Allen, music, who received the Thomas More Storke Award, the top undergraduate honor at UCSB. Other graduating seniors who received major awards were Azarel B. Rainbow, dramatic art, for the Jeremy D. Friedman Memorial Award, and Eric Ridgeway, history and black studies, for the Alyce M. Whitted Memorial Award.
