Paid Leave Plan SuggestedThe University of California is proposing to allow nonrepresented, full- and part-time staff employees up to 16 hours additional paid leave time. The one time-only Bonus Leave Program idea, which was originally to run between Dec. 15, 2004 and June 30, 2005, is currently under formal review and UC is asking for employees' opinions.
Recent comments have suggested limiting the use period to December and January because the focus was on granting employees more time during the holidays, especially for UC facilities that close during this period, explained Paul Schwartz, communications director for human resources and labor relations in the Office of the President.
For now, the bonus plan's timeframe is "variable," said Schwartz. "There will be no definitive period until after all comment has been analyzed," probably with publication of the policy in late June.
In the meantime, "I would appreciate receiving comments by Wednesday, June 9, via email to <cynthia.cronk@hr.ucsb.edu>," said Cynthia Cronk, director of UCSB Human Resources.
The 2004-05 Bonus Leave Program will provide two additional paid leave days (16 hours for full-time employees, less for part-time employees) to nonrepresented staff employees not receiving a general salary increase in 2004-05. The temporary program is intended primarily for use during the December 2004 holiday period for locations that plan to close fully or partially during that period, according to the At Your Service Web site <http://atyourservice.ucop.edu>.
However, if an eligible employee fails to use the bonus leave time before the program ends, the current proposal permits the unused hours to be added to accrued vacation time. Employees on START would receive bonus leave based on their pre-START percentage of employment.
