Conferences Bloom in SpringFrom the creative challenges of translating concepts into another language to immigrant families' English acquisition to information technology and the African diaspora, campus conferences in the next two weeks offer a rich repast for the mind.
"Literary Translation: Revisiting the Text in the Humanities" is a free, one-day event on Thursday, April 29, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in HSSB 6020. It continues in the UCen Harbor Room between 2-4 p.m., with a reception afterward. See <www.cltc.ucsb.edu/translationsymposium> for the program.
The following conferences both occur on May 7-8:
"AfroGeeks: from Technophobia to Technophilia" runs 8:30 a.m. to around 6 p.m. both days in HSSB 6020 (McCune Conference Room). Its program is at <www.afrogeeks.com> and the free conference, which asks for on-line registration, includes two lunches.
The UC Linguistic Institute's conference in Corwin Pavilion asks for on-line registration <www.lmri.ucsb.edu> by Friday, April 30. It charges participants $50 to hear about family literacy practices and bilingualism. Two guest keynoters bookend the conference.
