Faculty Outreach Project Support Cut Back
More than $200,000 in new or additional support was awarded to faculty-initiated outreach projects this year by the Chancellor's Outreach Advisory Board, reported Joe Castro, executive director of campus outreach initiatives.
Reflecting earlier cuts in UC's outreach budget, this amount was about 40 percent less than the $370,000 disbursed last year to campus faculty. Even so, noted Castro, "The Faculty Outreach Grant program is among the highest outreach priorities on our campus."
The funds were divided among six projects, all of which were based in Isla Vista Elementary School, the Sedgwick Natural Preserve, or the campus's partnership schools in towns such as Santa Maria, Lompoc, Fillmore, Santa Paula, and Oxnard. None of the projects received more than $40,000 this year.
Most of the faculty outreach grants supported campus-based special projects in science, mathematics, history, and writing, pointed out Castro. "All of these projects serve local students and teachers," he added.
A group of new Chicano studies faculty, led by assistant professors Tara Yosso, Guisela La Torre, and Gerardo Aldana, plan to launch an art education outreach program this spring in an Oxnard high school. Called ArtReach, Castro described the initiative as "exciting, innovative, and responsive to local needs."
Sally Holbrook, professor of ecology, evolution, and marine biology, and her selection committee evaluated 14 FOG proposals totaling around $720,000 this year. The committee falls under the advisory board, which is currently chaired by Ken Millett, professor of mathematics.
